The Sacroiliac Joint has been known to be an under-recognized cause of back pain. Between 14-22% of patients have chronic lower back pain, which can be derived from the SI Joint. In recent years, the sacroiliac joint has emerged as an important part of the preoperative diagnostic workup for patients with chronic low back pain. The SI joint is responsible for transferring and bearing weight and connects your spine to your pelvis. Some research has demonstrated that the sacroiliac joint can be the source of pain in 14-22% of patients with chronic low back pain. Many of these cases are either misdiagnosed or undiagnosed.
Many clinicians do not look for the SI joint as a cause of chronic low back pain. This is likely because surgical interventions for the sacroiliac joint have only emerged in recent years, especially with a minimally invasive approach. Surgeons who do not properly evaluate patients prior to surgical intervention may be tempted to pursue surgeries that are neither cost-effective nor effective for patient outcomes.
At Prairie Spine and Pain Institute, Dr. Kube has been performing minimally invasive SI joint fusions since May of 2011. He is the first surgeon in the world to perform a true minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion. At Prairie Spine and Pain Institute, we can ensure accurate diagnoses with a thorough history and physical exam in conjunction with imaging studies.
